◆The 13th seminar, named “A Look into the Past: The multidisciplinary analysis of paleofeces provide important insights into our dietary history and the evolution of our gut microbiome”, was held online on November 24, 2021 (Wed.)

Frank Maixner “A Look into the Past: The multidisciplinary analysis of paleofeces provide important insights into our dietary history and the evolution of our gut microbiome”

The application of metagenomic analysis on gut microbiomes from the Neolithic to modern specimen brought scientists to address unique evolutionary research questions on human dietary history. Dr. Frank Maixner introduced his recent projects that demonstrate some gut microbiome structures correlate to a relatively recent shift of modern westernized dietary lifestyle, analyzing paleofeces and ancient human mummies across the world. Subjecting from the Iceman in the early agricultural period and the Hallstatt community between the Bronze to Iron age in the Northern Alpine, Egypt, the Andes, China, his research highlights how microbiome genome analysis contributes to the search of human past.

◆The 12th seminar, named “Development of an ultra-trace sulphur isotope analysis system for estimating the original mine of vermilion excavated from archaeological sites”, was held online on November 20, 2021 (Sat.)

Takeshi Minami “Development of an ultra-trace sulphur isotope analysis system for estimating the original mine of vermilion excavated from archaeological sites”

Vermilion was used in many tombs during the Yayoi and Kofun periods. Vermilion is obtained by collecting the red parts after finely crushing ores from the cinnabar mine, and further grinding them into fine powder. We found that vermilion in tombs could be estimated the place of original cinnabar mine using sulfur isotope ratio. However, since there was a possibility of damaging cultural properties when sampling vermilion, we developed an ultra-trace sulfur isotope analysis system. Using this system, vermilion on the target surface can collect simply by pressing the adhesive tape without the damage of cultural properties, and a single grain of vermilion can analyze the sulfur isotope ratio.

◆The 11th seminar, named “Current and future perspective on paleogenomics in East Asia”, was held online on October 12, 2021 (Tue.)

Shigeki Nakagome “Current and future perspective on paleogenomics in East Asia”

Recent advances in genome sequence technologies have made it possible to obtain genomic data in systematic ways not only from present-day populations but also from those who died several thousand years ago. This research, paleogenomics, has been uncovering new information about human prehistory that could not been seen otherwise. With a specific focus on East Asia, this seminar covered a variety of topics including population migration and admixture in the continent, as well as the formation of modern populations in the Japanese archipelago.
